Herbert Karl Oehmichen (born August 14, 1915 in New York City , † July 23, 1990 in Los Angeles ) was an American handball player of German descent.

Career

Of from Oehmichen was the eldest of two children Leipzig originating conscientious objector Paul Oehmichen († 1964) and his Jewish wife Erna born Israelzik (1887–1951) born. In 1920 the family returned to Germany and initially lived in Naumburg , and from 1928 in Gera . After the seizure of power, Herbert Oehmichen was sent back to New York City by his parents in 1934 ; his parents and sister were refused to leave Germany some time later. He himself first worked as a cook in a fast-food restaurant and later as a restaurant manager. In the German-American Athletic Club of Queens Oehmichen played field handball and took with the US national team at the Olympic Handball Tournament in 1936 in Berlin part, where he in the games against Germany (1:29) and Romania (3:10) was used. Then Oehmichen was in Warsaw (Illinois) as an apprentice brewer . In October 1941 he was won by the United States Army , since August 1942 he had the rank of lieutenant . Due to his German language skills, Oehmichen completed what is known as POW training ( prisoner of war ) from January 1944 and was promoted to captain two months later . On D-Day (June 6, 1944) he landed in Normandy and from then on served, among other things, in the Battle of the Bulge . After the end of the war in May 1945, he brought his family together; his mother had previously been housed in the Theresienstadt concentration camp . A short time later, Oehmichen was awarded the Bronze Star Medal . In January 1946 he was discharged from the military and initially lived in Milwaukee . With his wife Bette geb. Cook (1923–1956) Oehmichen had two children, later he married his second wife Ramona geb. Fish (1916-2012). From then on, he worked full-time as a master brewer at Miller Brewing Company and lived in southern California until his death at the age of 74 .
