In 1932 he worked temporarily as a toolmaker in companies in the Soviet Union and after his return he worked in the Alfred Teves machine and fittings factory in Berlin-Wittenau . During the Second World War , he and other KPD members built up an operational resistance group there, which had contacts with the Uhrig and Saefkow groups . Splanemann was arrested on August 21, 1944 with 13 other workers in the company. On December 14, 1944, the People's Court sentenced him to death for “preparing for high treason ” and “ favoring the enemy in war” . On January 29, 1945 Splanemann was executed in the Brandenburg-Görden prison .

In 1946, numerous urns with the remains of murdered resistance fighters from the Berlin districts of Lichtenberg , Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg were buried in the Friedrichsfelde central cemetery. The names of the dead are noted on a plaque on the curtain wall of the Socialist Memorial . In addition to Herbert Splanemann, many other resistance fighters found their final resting place and a memorial here.
