The Herforder Brauerei GmbH is a brewery in East Westphalia Hiddenhausen-Sundern , near the town of Herford . In terms of beer output, the company was one of the largest German private breweries in the 1980s and, alongside the Ernst Barre private brewery, is the largest brewery in East Westphalia . In 2007 a majority stake was sold to the Warsteiner Group .

history

The Felsenkeller brewery was founded on April 1st, 1878 by the brothers Gustav and Georg Uekermann in Schweicheln near Herford . The name Felsenkeller goes back to the fact that the storage cellars were built into the mountain in the sloping terrain. On September 15, 1895, the 1.3 km long siding to the Herford train station was put into operation. In the underground loading station under the brewery yard, draft beer was loaded onto beer wagons. By 1928 the brewery had bought 35 beer cars. The first truck was purchased in 1911. Until then, up to 60 brewery horses had taken care of the beer transport. Until 1927 there was only the beer in the barrel. Finally, the beer was the first time in August 1927 bottles bottled, initially only the variety of malt beer . From March 1928, there was also export and pils in the bottle. The proportion of bottled beer in the business year 1927/28 was 0.8% of total beer sales of 166,514 hl. Around 200 people were employed in the brewery at that time. The fleet consisted of 15 horse-drawn carts and 10 trucks. In 1935, the 0.5 l swing top bottle was introduced, which remained in the range until 1967 and was then replaced by the 0.5 l euro bottle. This was exchanged for the NRW bottle in 1988. The 0.5 l flip top bottle was transported in wooden boxes. These were replaced by plastic boxes in 1965. In 1956 the 0.33 l Steinie bottle with a crown cap was introduced , which is still the main container of the brewery to this day. Until 1966 it was packed in wooden boxes, then in plastic boxes. In the brewing year 1967/68 the wooden barrels were replaced by aluminum barrels. The aluminum barrels were replaced by keg barrels in the 1985/86 brewing year .

The Felsenkeller Herford brewery celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2003. In February 2006 the brewery changed its name to "Herford Brewery GmbH & Co. KG". In 2006 the Herford brewery had a total output of 515,000 hectoliters. In the previous year it was 540,000 hectoliters. The brewery reached its peak in the 1980s with an annual output of 1.1 million hectoliters. At that time it was one of the largest German private breweries. Proof of history:

The Herford brewery was integrated into the Warsteiner Group on July 1, 2007 .

On February 1, 2018, the Warsteiner Group announced that the Herford brewery was looking for a partner to continue the “Herford Pils” brand. Alternatively, a sale is considered.

Herford Pils

The Herford Pils makes up 90% of the total volume of the Herford brewery. A third of the production is sold in barrels .

Since January 2007, Herford Pils has been sold in newly developed relief bottles. This relief bottle is a proprietary bottle shape that has the Steinie shape, but is no longer compatible with this in the reusable deposit system because of the company relief. The crates have also been revised and adapted to the size of the common euro pallets , so that there are now only 27 bottles in one crate instead of 30. However, Herford Pils is also available in boxes with 24 longneck bottles (0.33 l), 20 longneck bottles (0.5 l) or 20 relief bottles (0.33 l). From mid-2017, the relief bottles will increasingly be used for all beers. In addition, the products are also offered in 8-pack carriers.

Sponsorship

Herford Pils relies heavily on sponsorship in the sports sector, so teams from the sports football , handball (e.g. TBV Lemgo ), basketball (e.g. Artland Dragons ), ice hockey , tennis (e.g. TC Blau-Weiss Halle ) and American football (e.g. Bielefeld Bulldogs ) specifically supported. He has been the shirt sponsor of the club's soccer team several times and has been providing beer at VfL home games for years.
