The private brewery Ernst Barre GmbH , better known under the name Barre Bräu , is a brewery in the East Westphalian town of Lübbecke in the Minden-Lübbecke district and has its roots in the brewery founded by Ernst Johann Barre in 1842 . Measured in terms of beer output, the company, along with its direct competitor, the Herford brewery , is one of the largest breweries in East Westphalia and is therefore regionally influential. The brewery is located on the south-facing pass over the Wiehen Mountains in Lübbecke at the foot of the Reineberg and has been in the family for generations. The regional integration leads to numerous folk festivals founded or supported by the brewery, such as the beer fountain festival in Lübbecke, which has been taking place since 1954 . The brewery is a founding member of the initiative Die Freie Brauer , an association of medium-sized private breweries.

Barre Bräu is not only known in the Lübbecker Land , the products can also be found in restaurants and shops in the parts of Lower Saxony bordering to the north and west . Barre also has a certain importance in the Herford district to the south .

In 2014 the brewery's involvement in illegal price fixing became public.

history

In 1842 Ernst Johann Barre founded his first own brewery on Bergsattel in Lübbecke. The Ernst Barre private brewery developed from this.

In 1970 Barre Bräu founded the Vitamalz association with other breweries and beverage manufacturers.

The company has been exporting its products to China and Taiwan since 2013 .

In 2015 the brewery's output was 130,000 hectoliters.

Managing directors

Christoph Barre has been running the company since 1998 in the sixth generation of the family. His father Ernst-Ludwig Barre took over the management of the family business in 1965. With the reintroduction of the swing top bottle in the 1980s, the company succeeded in significantly increasing sales of the brewery and stabilizing the economic situation.

Illegal price fixing scandal

In January 2014 the Federal Cartel Office imposed a fine of 106.5 million euros on the private brewery Ernst Barre and four other breweries for fixing prices for draft and bottled beers in a beer cartel from 2006 to 2008. Barre denies this in a press release and confirms that he had agreed to the fine in negotiations with the Federal Cartel Office for economic reasons. On the Bundeskartellamt's homepage, however, the President of the Bundeskartellamt, Andreas Mundt , is quoted as follows: “Through our [the Bundeskartellamt's] investigations, we were able to prove agreements between breweries that were mainly based on purely personal and telephone contacts. The price increases for draft beer in 2006 and 2008 in the range of five to seven euros per hectolitre were agreed. For bottles of beer a price increase was in 2008 agreed that should lead to more expensive of the 20-bottle case of one euro. " . Furthermore, the Federal Cartel Office assessed Barre's willingness to settle out of court as a clear admission of guilt. A spokesman for the office disagreed with Barres' statement, stressing that Barre was involved in price fixing.
