Heriger of Lobbes

Heriger von Lobbes (also Heriger von Laubach ; * around 940 in Leuven in the County of Flanders ; † October 31, 1007 in Lobbes (German Laubach ), Belgium ) was a monk, clergyman and composer and from 990 to 1007 abbot of Lobbes Abbey in Hainaut .

Life

Heriger von Lobbes became a monk and scholaster (head of the school) in the Benedictine abbey of Liège . In 989 he accompanied Notker , the bishop of Liège and nephew of Emperor Otto I , on his trip to Rome. On December 21, 990 he was elected Abbot of Lobbes to succeed Folcuin . The monastery and school continued to flourish under his aegis. Wazo , the future bishop of Liège, and Albert von Gembloux were among his students.

Works

In addition to his work as a consultant to Notker, Heriger also made a name for himself as an author of biographical and hagiographical writings.

  • Vita S. Ursmari. The biography of St. Ursmar von Lobbes is written in hexameters and has only survived in fragments.

He also worked as a composer and created unison chants, of which a hymn and two antiphons (alternating chants) have been passed down.
