Herman Villere "Roscoe" Ernest III (* 12. August 1951 , † 7. March 2011 in New Orleans ) was an American rhythm-and-blues - drummer .

Live and act

Ernest was a long time member of the New Orleans music scene and began his career in funk groups; In the mid-1970s he played in productions by Allen Toussaint such as Patti LaBelle's disco hit Lady Marmalade . He also performed with Lee Dorsey ( Night People 1978), the Neville Brothers ( Fiyo on the Bayou , 1981), Irma Thomas , Aaron Neville , Maceo Parker , Solomon Burke ( A Change Is Gonna Come, 1986 ), Snooks Eaglin , Johnny Adams , Anders Osborne and Al "Carnival" Johnson on. Ernest was drummer with Dr. John and has worked on several of his albums, including Dr. John's Blue Note productions Duke Elegant (2000), Creole Moon and most recently in 2006 on his Johnny Mercer tribute album Mercernary , in which Ernest gives the introduction to Come Rain or Come Shine .

In 2004 he recorded an instructional DVD with Herlin Riley , Johnny Vidacovich and Earl Palmer . In 2009 he performed with jazz trumpeter Jeremy Davenport and Kermit Ruffins ( We'll Dance Til Dawn ), most recently in 2010 at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival . He died at the beginning of March 2011 after suffering from cancer for many years.
