Life
Lewis first appeared in Cecil B. DeMille's film adaptation of the Bible, Samson and Delilah, in 1949 , where he contributed to the sound. Hedy Lamarr and Victor Mature played the leading roles. This was followed by participation in numerous films and television productions, with the television series Perry Mason standing out, in which he participated in 188 episodes (1959 to 1966 and another nine episodes in 1973).
In 1971 Lewis and Murray Spivack received an Oscar nomination in the Best Sound category for the American-Japanese war film co-production Tora! Torah! Torah! by Richard Fleischer and Kinji Fukasaku with Martin Balsam and Joseph Cotten in two of the leading roles. However, the Oscar went to Don J. Bassman and Douglas O. Williams for the period film Patton - Rebel in Uniform . For the disaster film Die Höllenfahrt der Poseidon , Lewis and Theodore Soderberg again received an Oscar nomination in 1973 in the Best Sound category , but could not prevail over Robert Knudson and David Hildyard with the musical film Cabaret . In 1975 Lewis was nominated for the third time for an Oscar, again along with Soderberg, again for a disaster film, Inferno with Steve McQueen , Paul Newman and William Holden .
Lewis last appeared professionally in 1982. In the television film Family in Blue with Efrem Zimbalist Jr. he was responsible for the sound of the film at the mixer.
