Hermann Amelung

Hermann Amelung (born October 10, 1829 in Eisenach , † May 21, 1899 in Stettin ) was a German insurance lawyer.

Life

Amelung studied law at the University of Jena . In 1846 he became a member of the (later) fraternity Arminia on the Burgkeller and in 1847 a member of the Corps Guestphalia Jena . In 1848 he was a member of the democratic district committee in Jena .

Later he was a lawyer and director of Germania-Versicherung (Germania Unfall- und Haftpflicht-Versicherungs AG Stettin ). In the 1930s it merged with Iduna-Berlin (Iduna, fire, accident, liability and reinsurance stock company) to form Iduna-Germania Allgemeine Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft Berlin (from 1946 Iduna Allgemeine Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft, based in Hamburg). and ultimately merged with the Signal Iduna group of companies . Under his leadership, the company developed well and soon surpassed the well-known Gothaer Versicherung in new business . The actuary August Zillmer was one of his close associates .

Among other things, Amelung was elected in January 1887 in the elections for the fifteen-member electoral board at the election and general assembly of the Szczecin Liberal Electoral Association, at which Max Broemel was nominated as a Szczecin candidate for the Reichstag (German Empire) after the death of Carl Theodor Schmidt .

Marriage and offspring

Hermann Amelung married Antonie Lebrun († 1904), an actress at the Dresden Court Theater . She was the daughter of the Hamburg actor Karl August Lebrun ; her first marriage was to the English actor Sir William Henry Don, 7th Baronet (1825-1862).

The marriage had four children. The youngest son Walter Amelung became an archaeologist.
