The Hermann Apelt was a sea rescue cruiser of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) put into service in 1955 .

This ship was the first newly built cruiser of the so-called "new generation" with a daughter boat in the stern tub, after initial attempts with the rescue cruiser Bremen , the converted former motor lifeboat Konsul Kleyenstüber , the DGzRS had confirmed in the opinion that they had with their concept the cruiser with daughter boat were on the right track with regard to the procurement of new rescue vehicles.

Ultimately, this one-off was not perceived as the optimum, but the findings from the rescue missions were successfully incorporated into the development of the rescue cruiser Theodor Heuss , Ruhr-Stahl , HH Meier and Hamburg .

The Hermann Apelt was from the Lürssen - Werft in Bremen - Vegesack at shipyard no. 13218 built. The DGzRS internal designation was KRS 1.

The daughter boat initially only had the internal name KRT 1, but was christened Kurt Grundmann in 1970 . Originally it was planned to carry the Kurt Grundmann as a daughter boat in the cruiser, but in the end she drove as an independent sea rescue boat .

Naming

The ship was christened on June 3, 1955 in Bremen in the name of the former Bremen port senator Hermann Apelt .
The daughter boat was baptized in the name of Kurt Grundmann , a sponsor of the DGzRS.

Stationings

From June 1955 until it was decommissioned in October 1965, the Hermann Apelt was stationed on the island of Helgoland .

The Kurt Grundmann was stationed in Bremerhaven from 1956 to 1969 , after which it was relocated to Maasholm . There the boat was stored in a shed and could be lowered into the water via a slipway. In 1972 there was another change of station, this time to Grömitz . The boat remained there until it was decommissioned in 1977.

Whereabouts

After the decommissioning in 1965 was Hermann Apelt sold and thereafter as a tractor under the name Argus I used. Another change of ownership took place in 1988. Since then the ship has been used as a sailing yacht Totem in the Netherlands after the tower structure was removed .

The Kurt Grundmann was first exhibited from 1984 to 2001 in the (now closed) shipping museum in Senden , then it was sold to private customers.
