Hermann Budy
Hermann Johann Gottfried Budy (born December 28, 1838 in Brüsewitz near Stargard in Pomerania ; † July 2, 1907 in Altona ) was a German educator and musicologist and a close friend of Robert Schumann's children .
Life
Budy attended the Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin and passed his Abitur there at Easter 1858. He then studied theology at Berlin University . In 1860 he and other students founded the “academic Beethoven Association for Chamber Music” there. In 1861 he lived temporarily in Graditz near Torgau , where on November 5, 1861 he wrote a letter to Franz Richarz , the head of the private insane asylum in Endenich near Bonn , where Robert Schumann had spent the last years of his life. He revealed himself to be a great admirer of Schumann and wanted to "like to learn something positive" about Schumann's mental illness. The psychiatrist's answer is not known.
In 1865 Budy passed his exams as a teacher and in the same year became a private teacher for the children of Prince Friedrich zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst . In 1873 he was appointed teacher at the Zabelschen secondary school for girls in Gera and in 1881 he was appointed senior teacher by the Princely Reussian Ministry .
Budy got involved in Gera for the musical association and the Liedertafel and wrote numerous articles about it for the local press. He also became one of the closest friends of Ferdinand Schumann (1849-1891), who last lived in Gera, where he died on June 6, 1891 at the age of just 42 years. The Schumann researcher F. Gustav Jansen was one of his friends .
In 1904 he received the title of professor before retiring on April 1, 1904. He spent the last few years in Altona-Ottensen . There, in 1905, on behalf of Marie Schumann (1841–1929), he compiled for the first time a directory of all about 5000 letters to Robert Schumann that Clara Schumann had given to the Royal Library . It is still an important basis for Schumann research today.
