Hermann Ferdinand Julius Hering (also: Hermann Hering ; born February 26, 1838 in Dallmin ; † April 7, 1920 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the art gardener Heinrich Hering, Hering attended high school in Neuruppin and from 1858 studied theology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . He finished it in 1862 and was ordained as a ministerial candidate on December 2, 1863 as a deacon in Weissensee at St. Petri and Paulikirche . From there he was promoted to archdeacon in Weißenfels in 1869 , participated in the Franco-Prussian War as a nurse and became senior pastor in Lützen in 1874 and superintendent there in 1875 . After Hering had acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Theology at the University of Kiel as Hon. In 1878 , he became a full professor of theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Halle-Wittenberg .

In Halle he was rector of the Alma Mater in 1892/93 , became a university preacher in 1900 , consistorial councilor in 1904 and in 1908 he retired from academia .

Hering was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves for his service in 1908 , the Star for the Royal Crown Order II. Class in 1912 and was chairman of the prison society for the Province of Saxony until 1912 .

He wrote various essays and treatises in the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church and the Theological Studies and Reviews. He also dealt intensively with church history.

He lived with his wife Jenny Friederike Caroline Auguste, who was married in Berlin in 1865 and the daughter of the premier lieutenant in Berlin Franz von Schierstadt, at Friedrichstrasse 16. The two had five children. The son Franz Heinrich Hering (born February 5, 1866 in Weißensee, † July 14, 1937 in Leipzig) also took up the profession of theologian.
