Hermann Goßler

Hermann Goßler (born August 21, 1802 in Hamburg ; † May 10, 1877 there ) was a Hamburg lawyer, senator and mayor . He was a member of the Hanseatic Goßler family .

Goßler was a son of Johann Heinrich Goßler (1775-1842), Hamburg councilman and co-owner of the trading company Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co . His brothers Johann Heinrich Goßler (1805–1879) and Wilhelm Goßler continued the company. Johann Heinrich Goßler (1805–1879) was the grandfather of John von Berenberg-Gossler . His daughter Emilie (Emmy) Helene Goßler (* March 1, 1838 - † April 15, 1910) married Heinrich Kaemmerer on April 27, 1855 .

Life and politics

Goßler grew up in Hamburg and from 1822 studied law in Göttingen and Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1826. iur. received his doctorate. He settled in Hamburg in 1826 as a lawyer and practiced until 1837, at the same time he was also active as a poor carer at times. On May 5, 1837, he was appointed council secretary and served as secretary of the upper court from 1838 to 1842 (the legally trained councilors also formed the Hamburg upper court at the same time; the senate and court were not separated until the Senate reform in 1860). Shortly after the fire in Hamburg , on June 1, 1842, Goßler, who was comparatively young, was elected to the Hamburg Senate, to which he belonged until his death. Goßler held many different posts during his time in the Senate, for example from 1848 to 1853 he was a police officer (interior senator). He was elected Second Mayor for 1870, 1871 and 1873, and served as First Mayor in 1874 .

Goßler is remembered on the double collecting grave plate of the Gossler family in the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, Ohlsdorf Cemetery .
