Hermann Harless

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Harless (born April 30, 1887 in Merkendorf ; † April 26, 1961 in Marquartstein ) was a German reform pedagogue . He was the founder and long-time director of the Marquartstein country school home .

Life

Harless was the eldest son of the Pegnitz dean Ernst Harleß and his first wife Luise, nee. Bischoff and a great-great-grandson of the humanist Gottlieb Christoph Harleß . As a pupil of Hermann Lietz , the founder of the Landerziehungsheime , Hermann Harless worked at the Odenwald School founded by Paul Geheeb until 1920 and later took over the management of the New German School Hellerau, where he a. a. worked with Alexander Sutherland Neill , who later founded the Democratic School Summerhill , but with whom he apparently did not agree on all pedagogical questions. As a committed reform pedagogue, he also represented his ideas in the Association of Decided School Reformers in the 1920s .

On October 13, 1928, Harless founded the Marquartstein country school home , initially with only sixteen students. The school quickly enjoyed great popularity, so that the number of students grew to around a hundred by 1935. In 1943 the school was nationalized because of Harless' "political unreliability"; it still exists as a state school today.

Harless' success as a teacher seems to be based not least on a close personal relationship with his students. This shows u. a. in the fact that "alumni" affectionately call him "Pappi Harless" to this day.

Hermann Harless is the father of the doctor and politician Walter Harless .
