Life

After attending the community school and the Progymnasium in Eilenburg, Hermann Hartmann passed the Abitur at the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale in 1882 . From 1882 to 1885 he studied medicine in Halle , Berlin and Würzburg . After graduating, he completed the one-year military service. Hartmann then worked as an assistant doctor to several general practitioners until he settled in Connewitz near Leipzig in 1890 as a general practitioner and obstetrician . Dissatisfied with the doctors' wages, Hartmann published an open letter to the medical profession on July 25, 1900 , in which he suggested the formation of a medical association to safeguard the interests of the class.

“Dear colleagues! Let us create a firm, purposeful organization for the purpose of vigorously representing our extremely endangered interests! Let us join together, the individual is nothing, all together we are one power. Then one should no longer count on the individual doctor, but on the whole. Everywhere we see the members of the individual professions joining together to achieve their goals through the force of joint action: we act the same way, success cannot fail! One for all, all for one! Doctors of all German states, get organized! "

Almost two months after this call, Hartmann joined forces with twenty colleagues and on September 13, 1900 founded the “Association of Doctors in Germany to Safeguard their Professional Interests”, which was also known as the “Leipziger Verband” (since 1924 “Hartmann Bund “) Was designated. He was then chairman for over 20 years. In 1912 a medical professional association was founded under the direction of Hartmann. In 1920 he took over the editing of the medical reports founded by the association in 1904 . He created a widow's and orphan's fund, a loan and death fund and a waiting allowance fund for the doctors. In 1916 he bought a piece of land in Bad Berka on which the first German convalescent home for doctors was later built.

In 1917 he was awarded the title of Medical Councilor for his services at the German Red Cross during the war .

Hermann Hartmann died on January 23, 1923 as a result of several strokes . He was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery , grid square AF 31 (north of Chapel 6), in Hamburg .

Honoring Hartmann's commitment to the creation of a professional association of doctors, the association he founded in 1924 named itself “Verband der Ärzte Deutschlands e. V. Hartmannbund ". In his hometown of Eilenburg, a street is named after Hartmann.
