Hermann Julius Schlösser (born December 21, 1832 in Elberfeld , † June 21, 1894 in Rome ) was a German history , nudes and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School , who at times also tried his hand at sculpting . Living in Rome since 1862, he is one of the late German Romans .

Life

Schlösser attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1852 to 1856 . There was Karl Ferdinand Sohn his teacher. In Paris , where he went afterwards, he caused a sensation with the "frivolous-romantic" image of a Joan of Arc . At the age of 27 he received the grand prize for history painting from the Berlin Art Academy . In 1862 he moved to Rome for the rest of his life. He earned the reputation of a history painter for Greek mythology and Prussian national romanticism . He became known for the "demonstration of beautiful body shapes" in a "realistic view" of the myth depicted. The picture Venus Anadyomene floating up out of the ocean waves, surrounded by tritons, nereids and cupids , which he had submitted to the Berlin academic art exhibition in 1870, was objected to by the Prussian minister of education Heinrich von Mühler , then bought by a consortium of art lovers and in many Cities issued. He also tried his hand at a sculptor by submitting a draft for a Kaiser Wilhelm monument in his hometown Elberfeld and transferring his painting Thetis von Peleus , for which he had received a small gold medal in Berlin, in wax. In 1896 Schlösser's estate in Munich was sold.
