Hermann Krauss

Hermann Krauss (born December 5, 1904 in Itzelberg ; † 2003 ) was a pedagogue , local history researcher and author .

Life

Krauss was the eldest son of an iron lathe operator and attended elementary school at his birthplace Itzelberg, then the high school in Heidenheim and from 1920 to 1926 the teacher training college in Backnang . From 1926 to 1928 he was a commercial clerk and music reporter at the Heidenheim daily newspaper "Der Grenzbote" before he worked as a school intern in Königsbronn and Ebersbach an der Fils in 1928/29 . From 1929 to 1932 he was a music teacher at the teachers' seminar in Künzelsau . At that time he married Marie Häberle in Ochsenberg (Königsbronn) in 1931 . In 1932 he came to Güglingen, where he initially worked as a teacher at the elementary school and also directed the church choir and the men's choir . From 1942 to 1945 he took part as a soldier in the Second World War in theaters of war in France , Italy and Slovakia . From 1945 to 1948 he was a Soviet prisoner of war . After his return to Güglingen he worked again as a teacher at the elementary school and in 1951 moved to the local council , of which he was a member until 1968. From 1952 to 1962 he was part of the director of the Güglingen Music School, and in his final years he was the rector of the Güglingen elementary and secondary school.

Honors

In 1970, when he retired, he became an honorary citizen of Güglingen. On October 26, 1984, on his 80th birthday, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Above all, Krauss published autobiographical writings which, due to their size, go far beyond personal memories and are therefore also of local historical interest. One of his main research areas was the history of the concentration camps in Baden-Württemberg . His main work is the twelve-volume autobiography "As a small man in the great twentieth century", which was published in excerpts from 1983 in the Zabergäuvereins magazine and in the Güglinger Official Journal, the main part 1983/84 in the Heilbronner Voice , and individual volumes later as separate publications in Published by the author. In addition to autobiographical writings, he has also written poetry . He was considered a “cultural authority” in his home community Güglingen, and his extensive estate is kept in the Güglingen archive.
