Hermann Kunz-Krause

Johann Wilhelm Hermann Kunz-Krause (born October 5, 1861 in Leipzig ; † February 12, 1936 ) was a German pharmacologist.

Life

Hermann Kunz-Krause completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist's assistant with Theodor Pallmann in Plauen, after having attended St. Thomas Gymnasium in Leipzig until 1877 . From 1880 he took positions in pharmacies in Leipzig, Lucerne , Vallorbe , Geneva and again Leipzig.

In the summer semester of 1883 he went to the University of Leipzig , where he studied pharmacy and was assistant to Justus Radius from his first year and, after his death, to Rudolf Boehm . In 1885 he passed the state examination, stayed at the Pharmacological Institute until the end of the summer semester of 1886 and then switched to the University of Freiburg for a doctorate , as he could not do a doctorate in Leipzig without an Abitur.

After working as a pharmacist in Fontaines and Neuchâtel , in 1887 he received an assistant position in the agricultural chemical research station at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich . In the same year he moved to the Chemical Institute of the École de Pharmacie Lausanne , where he was appointed professeur agrégé in 1888 and professor with teaching position for applied and pharmaceutical chemistry in 1889. In 1899 he was appointed to succeed Ewald Geissler (1848–1898) as professor and director of the Chemical Institute of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Dresden , and in 1903 as full professor. In addition, he received the appointment as pharmacy examiner in the Saxon auditing district. In 1904 he became an extraordinary and in 1907 a full member of the Technical Deputation of the Saxon Ministry of the Interior. Since 1907 he was a member of the State Medical College, which later became the State Health Office. He retired in 1923 to relocate the Dresden University of Veterinary Medicine to the University of Leipzig as a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. In 1925 he retired from all offices due to a serious illness.

Kunz-Krause was the author of over 120 magazine articles and 8 books. He worked in the field of phytochemistry including the detection and constitution determination of alkaloids. Another focus of his work was galenics . He was editor of the "Pharmaceutical News from Science and Practice" .

Since his marriage in 1892 to the daughter of the Freiberg pharmacist Hermann Krause, he had the double name Kunz-Krause. The couple had two sons. He was a member of the Corps Saxo-Borussia Leipzig.
