Hermann Karl Merkel (born June 7, 1873 in Nuremberg , † May 27, 1957 in Munich ) was a German forensic doctor and university professor.

Life

Hermann Merkel was the son of the Nuremberg physician Gottlieb von Merkel and his wife Emma, ​​née Schwarz. He had six brothers and three sisters. In 1893 he finished his school career at the Melanchthon-Gymnasium in Nuremberg with the final examination and then completed a degree in medicine at the Universities of Erlangen , Munich and Freiburg im Breisgau . Since 1893 he belonged to the German fraternity of Bubenreuth . After completing his studies, he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate and approved in July 1898 . He then worked at the Nuremberg hospital and the Berlin Charité and from October 1899 as an assistant at the pathological institute for pathological anatomy and forensic medicine at the University of Erlangen.

He completed his habilitation in Erlangen in January 1903, where he initially worked as a private lecturer in pathological anatomy and forensic medicine, and from December 1909 as adjunct professor. In December 1912, Merkel received an associate's degree in pathological anatomy and forensic medicine at the University of Erlangen. He headed the forensic and medical department of the pathological institute of the Univ. Gain. At the beginning of May 1914 he accepted the chair for forensic medicine in Munich. In addition to his work as a professor and director of the Institute for Forensic Medicine, he was also a regional court doctor at the regional court of Munich I.

During the First World War he worked as a medical officer in a Bavarian military hospital and then to a hospital in Fort Metz and from 1916 as an Army pathologist of the Army Division C . After the end of the war he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class and discharged from the army with the rank of senior staff doctor. He was promoted to senior medical officer in 1921.

During the time of the Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism , Merkel continued to work as a university professor and regional court doctor in Munich. From September 1933 he was associate professor in Munich and from July 1933 full professor. He became a member of the NSDAP and the SA and was an official medical assessor at the Hereditary Health Supreme Court in Munich. Merkel retired in August 1938, but remained in office until after the end of the Second World War .

After the liberation from National Socialism , Merkel was dismissed from the university office by the American military administration at the end of July 1945 due to his membership in Nazi organizations. His objection raised as a result was rejected. After a court hearing in which he was able to present several exonerating letters of confirmation, he was denazified as a fellow traveler on January 16, 1948 and rehabilitated after paying an atonement of DM 2000. Merkel was forced to retire in 1948 and 1952/53 emeritus .

Hermann Merkel had been married to "Emmy" Friederike Wilhelmine, née Jäger (1882–1967), since 1903, and the couple had six children.

His research focus and publications were in the pathological-anatomical area, in particular on questions of natural and unnatural death. He did pioneering work in determining blood groups in paternity trials and determining blood alcohol levels for use in court proceedings.
