Hermann Ottomar Herzog attended the Academy in Düsseldorf from 1849 , where he trained from 1851 to 1854 under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Rudolf Wiegmann . He also took private lessons from Andreas Achenbach and Hans Fredrik Gude . From 1854 to 1871 he belonged to the artists' association Malkasten . After completing his studies, Herzog went on study trips to Norway , Switzerland , Italy and the Pyrenees. From all these countries and regions, mostly from Norway, he brought back numerous mountain landscapes with masterful drawing and appealing coloring, if not exactly of a poetic conception. The best include: The wrestling festival in Unspunnen in Switzerland (1862), also Norwegian Fjord , The Wetterhorn , Alpenglow , Das Lauterbrunnenthal , Norwegian waterfall . In the 1860s he traveled to North America and borrowed some motifs from the Yosemite Valley in California . He lived in Philadelphia until his death . His American work is also attributed to the Hudson River School .

Herzog, who is almost a hundred years old, left over 1,000 paintings. His son Lewis Edward Herzog , born in Philadelphia in 1868, also became a painter.
