Hermann Poetzlinger

Hermann Pötzlinger (* around 1415 ; † 1469 ) was a priest , monastery school principal and famous manuscript collector of the 15th century. Pötzlinger came from a Franconian noble family . His current fame is based on his book collection in the monastery of St. Emmeram .

Live and act

Hermann Pötzlinger was born around 1415 and comes from Bayreuth . After studying in Vienna , he held a pastor's position in the diocese of Bamberg from 1439 . Pötzlinger is said to have completed a degree in Leipzig later . In 1448 he came to the Benedictine monastery of St. Emmeram in Regensburg , where he served as a priest and school rector (Rector Scolarium). At that time, he put together the 110-volume collection of manuscripts that is still widely regarded today.

Works

A work from Pötzlinger's extensive collection, the Mensural Codex , which he mainly created and which is known as the Codex St. Emmeram , is well known. It is the oldest and most extensive manuscript with polyphonic music in Germany.
