Hermann Riffart (born November 3, 1840 in Cologne , † January 1, 1914 ; full name: Johann Hermann Hubert Riffart ) was a German architect of historicism .

life and work

He received his architectural training from Heinrich Strack in Berlin, where he was accepted into the architects' association in 1864. From the beginning of the 1870s, Riffart worked as a building officer in Düsseldorf . In addition to the building of the Düsseldorf State Art Academy (1875–1879), he planned to rebuild the Düsseldorf Residenzschloss , which had been destroyed by fire , but was never realized. In 1875 he took part in the competition for the art gallery on Friedrichsplatz in Düsseldorf, which he won, but the building was not implemented.

On July 3, 1873, his son Carl Maria Hermann was born in Düsseldorf. This attended the royal high school , received there lessons in construction. In July 1877 the son Ferdinand Maria Hermann was born in Düsseldorf. One of his sons later became a notary in Kevelaer. Daughter Mathilde was born in December 1879.

Riffart taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His best-known student was Bruno Schmitz , who studied with him from 1874 to 1878. His architectural watercolors were exhibited in the Eduard Schulte Gallery at Alleestraße 42 , among others .

Since 1875 Riffart lived at Capellstrasse 38 (today Kapellstrasse). The master builder Hermann Joseph Havenith (born March 5, 1841 in London; † August 10, 1905 in Birstein), who had a construction business in Düsseldorf, built the new building in 1873 (under monument protection since 1983). The Düsseldorf address book shows Hermann Riffart as the owner of the house until after 1914, with the place of residence being given as Kevelaer , probably that of his son.

In 1889 Hermann Riffart can be verified as a private master builder in Düsseldorf. At the end of 1891, he had been a city councilor since the beginning of the 1880s, together with the mirror and painting frame manufacturer Conzen, as well as the painter Ernst Bosch, to the board of directors of the School of Applied Arts .

A cousin of Riffart was the Berlin construction officer Wilhelm Neumann .
