Hermann Schacht

Hermann Schacht (born July 15, 1814 in Ochsenwerder near Hamburg , † August 20, 1864 in Bonn ) was a German botanist.

Life

Hermann Schacht studied science in Jena and was Schleiden's assistant until 1851 . Then he became a private lecturer at the University of Berlin . In 1856 and 1857 he traveled to Madeira Island for botanical purposes . In 1860 he received the professorship in botany at the University of Bonn .

In 1854 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina. Schacht was one of the younger generation of scientists who were sponsored by Alexander von Humboldt .

Honors

According to Schacht, the plant genus Schachtia H.Karst. from the family of the redness plants named (Rubiaceae).

Schacht's diverse research is based almost exclusively on microscopic examinations and mainly relates to the anatomy and physiology of plants . He wrote:

  • Development history of the plant embryo (Amsterdam 1850)
  • The microscope and its application (Berlin 1851, 3rd edition 1862)
  • The plant cell (Berlin 1852; in a new version under the title Textbook of the Anatomy and Physiology of Vegetables, Berlin 1856–59, 2 volumes)
  • Examination of commercially available tissues through the microscope (Berlin 1853)
  • The tree, studies of the structure and life of the higher plants (Berlin 1853, 2nd ed. 1860)
  • Contributions to the anatomy and physiology of plants (Berlin 1854)
  • Madeira and Tenerife with their vegetation (Berlin 1859)
  • Outline of the anatomy and physiology of plants (Berlin 1859)
  • The Spermatozoa in the Plant Kingdom (Braunschweig 1864)
