His main area of work is mechanisms of the protective immune response against pathogenic infections. First he analyzed the mechanisms of activation of T killer cells. He then studied the role of bacterial superantigens in this system. Since 1995 he has been working on the immunobiology of toll-like receptors (TLRs). He was one of the first to recognize that special CpG motif-containing bacterial / viral DNA activates the cells of the innate immune system via TLR9, while TLR7 or TLR8 recognizes uridine-rich RNA.

During his time in Ulm, he co-founded and supervised the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) "Lymphohaemopoiesis" as spokesman . In Munich he developed "Infection Immunology" as one of the scientific focal points of his faculty. He participated in the founding of the three SFBs of his faculty and has been spokesman for SFB 456 "Target structures for selective tumor interventions" since 1999.
