Hermilio Valdizán Medrano (born November 20, 1885 in Huánuco ; died December 25, 1929 in Lima ) was a Peruvian doctor who specialized in psychiatry and neurology and is known for his works on Peruvian medical history . He is considered Padre de la Psiquiatría Peruana ("Father of Peruvian Psychiatry"). He has also emerged as a writer .

Live and act

Hermilio Valdizán was born on November 20, 1885 in Huánuco in the Peruvian Andes . He studied medicine at the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos in the capital Lima and received by the Peruvian government a scholarship for a Europe -Stay. He studied in the city of Bologna in Italy and also toured France and Switzerland . After the outbreak of the First World War he returned to Peru. He worked on the history of the Lima Medical Faculty , which deals with the study of medicine during the various periods of the Conquest, the Colonial Era and the Republic of his country. One of his most important contributions was the establishment of the first psychiatric outpatient clinic at Dos de Mayo Hospital in Lima. In 1916 he founded the Chair of Nervous and Mental Diseases at the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos (Main University of San Marcos) in Lima. He also worked as a journalist for El Tiempo , where he published anonymously, and also wrote articles for La Prensa under the pseudonym Juan Serrano. He was one of the founders of the Anales de la Facultad de Medicina (Annals of the Faculty of Medicine), of which he was deputy editor (1918). In 1920 he published the first edition of the Revista de Psiquiatría y disciplinas conexas (journal of psychiatry and related disciplines) with Honorio Delgado (1892-1969 ). From 1922 to 1926 he was editor of the journal Unanue , which was devoted to the history of Peruvian medicine. From 1921 he headed the Asilo Colonia " Victor Larco Herrera " for the mentally ill in the Magdalena district and later became director of the psychiatric hospital of the same name. He reformed treatment methods for the mentally ill. He is the author of a work on Peruvian folk medicine ( Medicina popular Peruana , 1922, in three volumes), which he wrote in collaboration with Ángel Maldonado . He wrote a history of Peruvian medicine that was published posthumously (1944). He was a member of the Academia Peruana de la Lengua .

The Universidad Nacional Hermilio Valdizán in Huánuco , founded in 1964, is named after him. There is also a hospital named after him, the Hermilio Valdizán Hospital .
