The Hermod was a semi-submersible crane ship . The Hermod is the Balder's sister ship . Both ships were built in 1978 by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., which belongs to the Japanese Mitsui Group . The ship is also known as the SSCV Hermod . The name is derived from S emi S ubmersile C rane V nettle (dt. Semi-diving crane ship) and the Germanic god hermóðr , brother of Balder , ago. The ship was mainly used as a work ship in the offshore industry by the Dutch company Heerema Marine Contractors .

On September 15, 2017, the ship was loaded onto the Dockwise Vanguard and transported to Zhoushan . It is to be scrapped there.

At the time of their design, Hermod and Balder revolutionized shipbuilding for work ships, as they were groundbreaking due to their structure and performance.

The hull of the Hermod was identical to the Balder : It consists of two floats, each connected to the deck structure via three columns. In 1985, larger ballast tanks were added to the hull and pillars to increase the ship's capacity. The draft, which is around 12 meters (m) at the overpass, is lowered to around 28 m during work in order to reduce the effects of waves and surface currents.

It is driven by a diesel-electric system. The electrical energy is generated by seven diesel generators with 2765  kilowatts (kW) each. The electricity is used to drive the two electrically driven controllable pitch propellers at the stern, each with 4400 kW output, and the two electrically driven and retractable jet propulsion systems, each with 1470 kW output.

The twelve 22.5 t “Delta-Flipper” anchors are used to anchor the ship. They are attached to 4500 m long steel cables with a minimum breaking strength of 386 t.

The ship offers accommodation for the crew and workers for up to 336 people. Due to the environmental conditions, all cabins are heated and air-conditioned. There is also a helicopter deck on the ship. Helicopters up to the size of a Sikorsky S-61 can land on it.

With its two cranes, the Hermod can lift up to 8100 tons (t) in tandem with a radius of up to 39 m. With the minimum radius, both cranes are able to lower 600 t each to a depth of 3000 m below the working deck.
