Lord's feasts or feasts of the Lord (Jesus Christ) are solemn feasts and feasts in the liturgical year (also called " Lord 's year") through which the salvation mystery of Jesus Christ is unfolded from his incarnation and birth to the ascension and expectation of his return in the cycle of the year. Some of these festivals are generally celebrated in Christianity , some only in the liturgical year of the Catholic , Orthodox and Anglican churches .

history

The pentecosts , the 50-day Easter period , and every Sunday as the day of the resurrection of Jesus , which was therefore called Dominica , "Lord's Day" or "Day of the Lord", have been of central importance for Christian worship since the 2nd century .

In the early days of the church and after the end of the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire , the local churches initially set additional special days to thematically develop the Easter season. Easter was divided into the holy week and the Triduum Sacrum , the time after Easter into festivals such as Ascension and Pentecost . A separate Christmas cycle with Advent , Christmas and Epiphany also emerged.

Historicizing men's festivals such as the circumcision of the Lord , the baptism of Jesus, the presentation of Jesus in the temple, and the preaching of the Lord emerged. In the course of church history , the celebration of other festive secrets was added, such as the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ (1457), the Feast of the Name of Jesus (1721) and the Feast of the Holy Family (1921). In addition, as a new type of festival, ideas and devotion festivals such as the Trinity Festival (10th century), the festival of the body and blood of Jesus Christ (13th century), the festival of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (17th century ) have appeared as a new type of festival .) and the Feast of Christ the King (1925/26).

In the second millennium, the days of remembrance and feasts of the saints increased and overgrown the Lord's Year. In contrast, the Second Vatican Council brought the men's festivals back to the fore:

“The hearts of the believers are to be directed primarily to the Lord's festivals, in which the secrets of salvation are committed throughout the year. Therefore, the Lord's Year should be given the place it deserves in front of the saints' feasts, so that the full circle of the mysteries of salvation is celebrated in a fitting manner. "
