Sundays in the annual cycle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the church year of the Roman Catholic Church and in the English-speaking Protestant churches that follow the Revised Common Lectionary , Sundays in the annual cycle are those Sundays that do not belong to the Christmas or Easter cycle and are not superseded by any other festival . In summary, this time is called time in the annual cycle (Latin tempus per annum ). The Sunday count is followed by a count of the reading weeks, which is important for the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours . The liturgical color is green.

In the Protestant church year, these Sundays correspond to the Sundays after Epiphany and the Sundays after Trinity .

count

The counting is based on the counting of the weeks in the annual circle, which comprises 33 or 34 weeks. The count begins with the week after the feast of the baptism of the Lord , which itself still belongs to the Christmas group. The Sunday after the feast of the baptism of the Lord is always the 2nd Sunday in the annual cycle - actually: Sunday of the 2nd week in the annual cycle . The counting covers the Sundays up to Lent , which is followed by Easter , and continues with the week after Pentecost . Due to the changing date of Easter , the number of Sundays before and after Easter fluctuates. The feast of Christ the King is celebrated on the last Sunday of the church year, the Sunday before the 1st Sunday in Advent .

If a year has only 33 Sundays in the annual cycle, the Sunday that would be the turn of Pentecost is omitted from the count. As a result, the liturgical texts of the 33rd and 34th week, oriented towards the end of time , are always read.

Extraordinary shape

Until the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council , the two to six Sundays before pre-Lent (Sunday Septuagesima ) were referred to as "Sundays after the apparition of the Lord" and the 24 to 28 Sundays after Easter as "Sundays after Pentecost". If, because of an earlier Easter date, there were fewer Sundays after the appearance of the Lord, these were moved to the end of the church year, between the 23rd and 24th Sunday after Pentecost, as the "made up Sunday after the appearance of the Lord".

Reading order

In the second reading of the Holy Mass on Sundays in the annual cycle, sections from the New Testament letter literature are read one after the other as a path reading.
