Hershel Mark Farkas (born December 2, 1939 in New York City ) is an Israeli - American mathematician who studies function theory.

Farkas studied at Yeshiva University in New York with a bachelor's degree in 1961, a master's degree in 1963 and a doctorate in 1965 under Harry Rauch ( Analytic submanifolds of Teichmüller space ). From 1966 to 1968 he was an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University . He was associate professor from 1968 and from 1971 to 1978 professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY), where he was a colleague of Irwin Kra and worked with him. In 1970 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). He had been Professor of Mathematics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem since 1975 , where he had been a visiting professor in 1970. From 1982 to 1984 and from 2004 to 2006 he headed the mathematics faculty there and was director of the Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis from 1995 to 1999 . In 2008 he retired.

Farkas was visiting professor at SUNY in 1991/92 and several times thereafter (most recently from 2008 to 2011), in 2001 at Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles , in 2004 at the University of Melbourne and at Caltech . He deals with Riemann surfaces (including the Schottky problem and Jacobi varieties) and theta functions and is the author of a standard work in this area with Irwin Kra. He also deals with modular shapes and their application in geometry and number theory.
