The passenger ship Hertha was built in 1886 in the Aron & Gollnow shipyard, merged with Stettiner Oderwerke AG, in Stettin as a steamship with two propellers. As was often the case at the time, the ship was named after the shipowner's daughter, Hertha .

The passenger ship Hertha was built in 1886 for the Stralauer Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Manthey, Wolff and Zwerner as a steamship with a twin screw drive in the shipyard of Aaron & Gollnow, Stettin. It completed its test drive on April 17, 1886, during which it reached the enormous speed of 18 kilometers per hour for the time . The steamer was then used in the Berlin area on the Spree and Havel rivers . The sister ships , built in the same year, were called Concordia and Dorothea . In 1889 the Spree-Havel-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Stern took over the Stralauer Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Manthey, Wolff and Zwerner. The passenger assignments on the previous routes were continued.

In the turmoil at the end of the Second World War, the ship remained in the Soviet occupation zone of Berlin. The Russian military administration pulled together all the passenger ships that remained in their sector. From this consortium of expropriated private shipping companies, the state enterprise DSU, the German shipping and handling center, emerged as the predecessor of VEB Weisse Flotte on the orders of the new rulers. In 1949, the passenger ship was renamed Seid Ready , the greeting of the young pioneers of the GDR, and returned to service with the White Fleet , although the original name of the steamer was forgotten. In 1964, the ship was decommissioned and lay unused at the scrapping quay in Berlin-Stralau for about five years ; scrapping was planned. After the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, the Dentler shipping company, founded in 1928, on the Kyritz chain of lakes 80 km north of Berlin and 24 km long, the demand for excursions on the inland waters, which have no navigable connection to the Havel or Elbe, increased Has.

In 1969 Walter Dentler and his son Peter from Wusterhausen / Dosse found the run-down ship and bought it in a desolate state. On site, machinists removed the two steam engines and the hull was loaded onto a low-loader to be transported by truck to the shores of the Klempowsee . From 1970 to 1971 it was converted from a steamship to a motor ship with 263 registered seats. To enlarge the passenger space below deck, the two shipowners and designers used a discarded sidecar from the Stettin combustion engine from the Wittenberge depot. From 1971, the Dentler company (since 1928 a private business without state support) operated the ship as the fourth and largest in their fleet under the name Seebär . The drive units used were two 6-cylinder MAN diesel engines in series, each with 90 HP, which came from the Wehrmacht's reserves ( HWA 526D standard diesel engine ). Two reversing gears could be adapted from remnants of the Red Army .

The Berlin ship historian Kurt Groggert became aware of the ship Seebär in 1976 and identified it as the Hertha from 1886. Since 2002, it has had its old name again. On May 8, 2012, Prignitzer Leasing AG acquired the ship and continued to use it in passenger shipping on the Kyritz chain of lakes in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin region . The last land revision of Hertha took place in 2015. During the ultrasound examination of the ship's hull below the waterline, the ship's engineer determined a material thickness of 5–7 mm and granted the 130-year-old “lady” an operating license for the Kyritz chain of lakes until 2019-2020.

In May 2017, at the general meeting of the Berlin football club Hertha BSC named after the ship, it was announced that the two presidium members Ingmar Pering and Christian Wolter would buy the ship through an operating company. The purchase agreement was signed in June 2016 with effect from January 1, 2017. Hertha came to Berlin as planned, partly on the street and partly on the Havel, for the 125th anniversary of Hertha BSC on July 25, 2017. A restoration and conversion in accordance with the strict safety requirements for driving on Berlin's waters is in planning. The necessary financing of the project , which is estimated at 400,000 euros (including the purchase price), was provided by issuing exactly 1,892 shares (corresponding to the year the association was founded), which were issued since January 11, 2017, as well as donations. At least one thought, however, is to find a permanent berth as close as possible to the stadium, with a restaurant and a small club museum. The ship returned to Berlin on December 14, 2017. It covered the distance from Wustermark to Berlin-Treptow on its own.

At the end of 2018, no renovation had started, the steamer was still on the Rummelsburger Bucht .

The Berlin football club Hertha 1892 was founded on July 25, 1892 . The brothers Fritz and Max Lindner as well as Otto and Willi Lorenz had the idea to found the company. While looking for a name for the club, Fritz Lindner had the idea of naming the club Hertha . Shortly before, he and his father had sailed the same steamer of the same name on the Havel. Its chimney had the colors blue, white and yellow, which were also adopted as the club colors, although the yellow disappeared shortly afterwards. Since the siblings were only 16 and 17 years old, respectively, the Lindner's uncle, Ernst Wisch, became chairman and registered the association in the police headquarters on Molkenmarkt .
