Hervé Télémaque

Hervé Télémaque (born November 5, 1937 in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is a French painter and printmaker of Haitian descent. He lives and works in Paris , France and is an important representative of the contemporary artistic avant-garde in France, especially in the 1960s and 1970s.

life and work

Hervé Télémaque left Haiti in 1957 and studied with Julian Levi at the Art Students League in New York City until 1960 . During his stay in the USA he was under the artistic influence of the then predominant Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism , as it was newly developed by the American artists, especially by Arshile Gorky .

However, his art developed in the direction of the principles of Pop Art , and let him tread his own special artistic path. As early as 1959, his painting had its own style and expressiveness.

In 1961 Télémaque went to Paris, where he still lives and works today. He was one of the first figurative pop art artists in France. In addition to painting, he also works with collages and montages , which he mainly makes with colored paper.

In the early 1960s, his art received international attention. His work has been shown at important international exhibitions. In 1964 he was on the XXXII. Venice Biennale and documenta III in Kassel represented in the “ Aspects 1964 ” section. In 1968 he was invited a second time to a documenta , to the 4th documenta with his painting as a participant.
