Hervaeus Natalis
Hervaeus Natalis de Brito (or also: de Nedellec, Nédélec, Nédélek, Noël; first name also: Arveus, Erveus, Hervé) (* around 1260 in the diocese of Tréguier ; † August 7, 1323 in Narbonne ) was a French Dominican and a representative of the Thomistic scholasticism .
Natalis joined the Dominican Order in Morlaix in 1276 . After a stay at the Paris convent of St. Jacques (1302 to 1307) on theological studies, he taught at various study conventions in the French provinces , but probably also in Paris (until around 1310). From 1305 he was Provincial of his Order for France and in 1317 became Vice General. In the following year, 1318, he was unanimously elected general superior of the general order. He died on August 7, 1323 in the convent of Narbonne.
Natali's theology is a continuation of the teachings of Thomas Aquinas . Some scriptures can hardly be assigned to him or Thomas with certainty. His main topics are the doctrine of original sin , the problem of incarnation , the scientific position of theology, the relationship between church and state , the hierarchy within the church with the powers of the incarnation , as well as the sacraments . Natalis is credited with developing the concept of so-called immaterial matter , which became the starting point for angelology in Thomism .
The relationships with his contemporaries in Paris Eckhart von Hochheim and Duns Scotus are still largely unexplored. Natali's theological counterpart is Durandus of St. Pourçain (the doctor modernus ). In 1314 he was chairman of a commission condemning Durandu's teaching. In addition, Natalis also intervened in the Templar trials .
