Sacred Heart Church

The Catholic Herz-Jesu-Kirche is located in Schierschwende , a district of the rural community of Südeichsfeld in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia . The filial community Heart of Jesus belongs to the parish Wendehausen in the deanery Dingelstaedt in the Diocese of Erfurt .

history

The village of Schierschwende, evangelical since the Reformation , belonged to the parish in Falken . In the 19th century there was a decrease in the number of Protestant residents and simultaneous immigration from the Catholic neighboring villages of Eichsfeld . They attended mass in Wendehausen, the evangelical residents continued to go to church in Falken. At the end of the 19th century, the Catholics made up the majority in the village and therefore planned to build a church.

description

The elevated hall church was built from bricks in 1897–99. The nave is covered with a gable roof over three window axes and has an annex to the east which is offset to the south and which is also covered with a gable roof that merges with that of the nave. The long sides of the nave are reinforced by buttresses . The church tower in the west on a square floor plan , which houses the portal , is covered with a slate-roofed , two-tiered helmet , which is crowned by a tower ball with a weathercock sitting on it. The belfry is located in the lower part behind the sound arcades . The interior opens up to the interconnected truss roof not, however, until the roof ridge , but only to the crossbar. A gallery is only in the west for the organ . The church was renovated between 1969 and 1971 and received new church furnishings . The oil painting on the altar wall in the choir , which depicts the Sacred Heart , was originally on loan from the All Saints Church in Erfurt .
