history

The former German government
steamer
Duchess Elisabeth as the French auxiliary patrol boat Margared Elisabeth in 1916 off Cameroon

From its commissioning from 1902 to 1914, the Duchess Elisabeth served as the official vehicle of the imperial governorate of the German colony of Cameroon. In order not to let the ship fall into the hands of the Allies after the outbreak of World War I , she was sunk on September 27, 1914 in the mouth of the Wuri . To what extent she was involved in the defense of the colony up to this point is not yet known.

At an unknown point in time, but still during the World War, the yacht was lifted by the British, according to Erich Gröner , and put into service as Margareth Elisabeth . It is not known whether she was a member of the Royal Navy during this period or was subject to regional British colonial authorities. From 1916 to 1919 she apparently served in the French Navy as an auxiliary patrol boat under the name Margareth Elizabeth (other spelling Margared Elisabeth ). Details about the further use and the final fate are not yet known.
