Hestholm

Hestholm is an island in the Schlei in Schleswig-Holstein .

The name means "horse island", from Danish hest (= "horse") and holm (= "small island").

It lies in the large width and has an area of only a few hundred square meters. Their maximum height is about 40 cm above sea level . It is flooded during floods , creating a botanically valuable salt marsh . For this reason, the island has been designated as a nature reserve since 1976 . This nature reserve " Reesholm / Schlei ", to which the Reesholm peninsula (also Palör , Danish: Rejsholm ) belongs, has an area of 1.20 km².

Hestholm belongs to the district Schlei of the municipality Schaalby (former municipality Füsing, which was incorporated into Schaalby in 1974 as part of the regional reform). It bears the parcel number 2 within corridor 3 of the Schlei district. The parcel has an official size of 4,563 m². This was the actual size of the island in 1876, an indication that the island was much larger then than it is today. According to current (2008) information from sailors, the island is now completely flooded.

Hestholm is a resting place for cormorants , especially in spring , as they dry their plumage here after diving.

Hestholm is located 285 meters east of the Reesholm peninsula, which protrudes into the Schlei from the north, and can be seen as an extension of the eastern Schleis side of the peninsula. The surrounding water of the Great Latitude between the island and the peninsula is very shallow, but in the south of the island it reaches as far as the fairway.
