Hideki Irabu ( Japanese 伊 良 部 秀 輝 , Irabu Hideki ; * May 5, 1969 in Miyakojima ; † July 27, 2011 in Rancho Palos Verdes ) was a Japanese baseball player who also played on the pitch in the North American Major League .
Career
In the Japanese Pacific League he has held the record for the fastest fastball ever thrown (158 km / h) since 1993 .
He was born in Okinawa Prefecture on the island of Miyako-jima , which was then administered by the USA, to an Okinawa mother and an American soldier, who, however, left shortly after Hideki's birth. His mother then married a Japanese man and he grew up in Amagasaki , Hyogo Prefecture . The family later moved to Kagawa Prefecture , where he attended the Jinsei Gakuen High School in Zentsūji , with which he took part in the 1986 and 1987 Summer Kōshien .
From 1988 to 1996 Irabu played in the Pacific League for the Lotte Orions , which him in the first round of the draft, had selected the 1987th In 1997 he joined the New York Yankees , then the defending champion of the World Series . Irabu's move contributed to the agreement of the posting system in 1998, which is intended to prevent Japanese star players from switching to the major league without compensation. In 1998 and 1999 he won the World Series with the Yankees, before moving to the Montreal Expos (2000-2001), then to the Texas Rangers (2002) and from 2003 to 2004 again in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers , where he played to them helped her first league title since 1985.
He then retired from sports and ran a Udon noodle restaurant in Los Angeles until 2008 . In April 2009 he made his comeback when he played for the independent American Golden Baseball League and then from August for the semi-professional Kōchi Fighting Dogs in Japan. In 2010 he lived again in the USA in Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles County .
On July 27, 2011, Irabu was found dead in his home - the police suspect suicide. Irabu leaves behind a wife and two children.
