description

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium carneum is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The upright stems are glabrous or covered with fine and coarse 0.6 to 1 cm long hair and have a hairless base.

At the base of the stem there are no or up to five basal leaves , while there are four to eight, and occasionally more, leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 4-12 centimeters and a width of 0.5 to 2 centimeters upside-lanceolate about lanceolate to linear with wedge-shaped to Spreitenbasis truncated and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are whole. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf can be glaucous and have fine hairs 0.3 to 0.6 cm long, but they can also be bald.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is in July. The panicle -like to panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains 6 to 25, occasionally more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is usually glabrous, more rarely also hairy glandular. With a diameter of 0.7 to 1 centimeter, the bell-shaped involucre contains 13 to 16, sometimes more on the underside, mostly bald, more rarely glandular hairy bracts . The flower heads around 20 ray florets. The white to light pink ray florets are about 0.8 inches long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 3 to 4.5 millimeters. The pappus consists of 50 to 60 white to straw-colored bristle hairs, which are 0.4 to 0.5 centimeters long.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium carneum is in the southern United States and northern Mexico. It includes the US states of Arizona , New Mexico and Texas as well as the Mexican state of Chihuahua .

Hieracium carneum thrives on rocky surfaces at altitudes of 2000 to 2300 meters.
