Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium horridum is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 40 centimeters. The upright stems are usually covered with fine and coarse, 0.2 to 0.4 cm long hair and usually have a star-like hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are three to six, sometimes more basal leaves , while there are also three to six or more leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 1.5 to 15 centimeters and a width from 0.6 to 3 centimeters from oblong to about spatulate upside-lanceolate with wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and blunt to tapered Spreitenspitze. The spreading margins are mostly whole, more rarely also serrated. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are covered with fine and coarse to wooly hairs 0.2 to 0.4 centimeters long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to September. The inflorescence shaft is covered with star-like, occasionally with rough hair. The panicle -like to panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains 3 to 100 or more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. With a length of 0.6 to 0.9 centimeters and a diameter of 0.3 to 0.4 centimeters, the more or less cylindrical to bell-shaped involucre contains 12 to 15, sometimes more on the underside, mostly densely haired, more rarely bald Bracts with pointed or pointed tips. The flower heads contain 6 to 15 or more ray florets. The yellow ray florets are 0.8 to 0.9 centimeters long.

The light to red-brown achenes are columnar with a length of 0.3 to 0.35 centimeters. The pappus consists of around 60 or more straw-colored bristle hairs, which are 0.4 to 0.6 centimeters long.
