Life
Hildegard (Hilde) Fiedler grew up in Düsseldorf and was bombed there with her family during the Second World War. The family was evacuated to Thuringia. After the end of the war, Hilde Fiedler came to Siegen by chance in 1945, even though her mother originally came from Siegerland . She found accommodation with relatives in Dreis-Tiefenbach and, as a trained commercial clerk, got a job relatively quickly at the Reichwald company, today Reichwald & Co., in Siegen. Later she was a translator in the office of the Belgian garrison; since 1946 the 6th Lancers, an armored infantry regiment, were stationed in Siegen. At the end of the 1950s, she was employed by the Federal Miners' Union , where she was employed for over 30 years.
Hilde Fiedler joined the SPD in 1958. She comes from a social democratic family. Her brother Willy Könen was an SPD member of the Bundestag from 1953 to 1969. From 1961 to 1994 Hilde Fiedler was a member of the City Council of Siegen. From 1964 to 1969 she was deputy chairwoman and from 1979 to 1989 chairwoman of the cultural committee. In 1989 she was elected mayor of Siegen after having been deputy mayor from 1983 to 1987.
After her retirement from active politics, Hilde Fiedler was constantly working for art and culture in the Siegen area.
