Hilde Zach (born August 25, 1942 in Hall in Tirol ; † January 15, 2011 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian local politician . She was Mayor of Innsbruck from 2002 to 2010 .

Life

After completing a commercial apprenticeship, Zach initially worked in his parents' company, then as an independent entrepreneur. In 1991 she became the economic district chairwoman of Innsbruck-Stadt. In 1994 she became a founding member of the Association for Innsbruck , for which she successfully ran for city council in the same year. From September 10, 2001 she was the chairwoman of the association. Since the then incumbent Mayor of Innsbruck, Herwig van Staa, was elected Governor of Tyrol on October 26, 2002, the Innsbruck City Council elected Hilde Zach as the new mayor in a special meeting on October 30, 2002, making him the first woman to head a state capital. In the municipal council election on April 23, 2006, she came with a turnout of 59.1 percent to 26.8 percent of the vote and was confirmed in office despite the high loss of votes.

Since she came from a butcher dynasty, she was sometimes also called "Fleischkas-Hilde" or, more briefly, "Wurscht-Hilde". The nickname "Wilde Hilde", however, did not arise from her origins, but rather was due to her behavior in everyday political life, which is sometimes described as traditional.

In March 2010, Zach announced her retirement from politics for health reasons. She was succeeded on March 8, 2010 by Christine Oppitz-Plörer . On the same day Innsbruck's municipal council decided to give Hilde Zach an honorary citizenship of the city. She died on January 15, 2011 of complications from cancer . She was buried on January 21, 2011 after a funeral ceremony in Innsbruck Cathedral and a large convoy through the city center to the Westfriedhof .

Hilde Zach was a member of the Chamber of Local Authorities of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe .
