The Hildebrand tunnel in the Harz mining region is a former mine in the Elbingerode (Harz) district of the town of Oberharz am Brocken in Saxony-Anhalt . He served primarily the further exploration of the mountain mining area Elbingerode on Büchenberg and is currently as quarters for bats as well as a station of Elbingeröder mining trail used.

location

The Hildebrand tunnel is located in the northern Harz not far from the federal highway 244 , which connects Wernigerode with Elbingerode (Harz). The Weißkopfchaussee runs below the tunnel , which joins the Bundesstrasse 244 at the former Bolmke Chausseehaus (later used as the “Zur Recreation” inn) not far from the Wernigerode Castle Water House . A little further west of the Hildebrand tunnel , the Charlotten tunnel from 1803 leads into the Büchenberg as a water dissolving tunnel. The mouth of this tunnel has been preserved to this day as a monument of the town of Upper Harz am Brocken. Not far from there is still the mouth of the Augustenstollen .

history

At the Büchenberg, mining was already a major activity in the High Middle Ages , with territorial borders initially playing a rather subordinate role. The border between the Elbingerode office and the county of Wernigerode ran only a few meters not far from today's Hildebrand tunnel . The Elbingerode office belonged to the Prussian province of Hanover until 1932 and was then added to the Prussian province of Saxony . Since then, the state border that once ran here no longer played a role for mining.

When ore mining was resumed on Büchenberg in the mid-1930s, the Hildebrand tunnel was excavated as an exploratory tunnel in the direction of the iron ore deposit on Büchenberg in 1937 . After the adit changed hands, the tunneling was stopped in 1939. At this point in time, the Hildebrand tunnel was about 220 m long. With the cessation of operation of the mine on the Büchenberg, the Hildebrand tunnel finally lost its importance and was forgotten.

It was not cleared again until 2011 in order to be able to use it as roost for bats. The mouth hole was designed accordingly and secured by a metal construction.

tourism

The Hildebrand tunnel is now part of the mining educational trail through the Elbingerode mining area. It is decorated with a Dennert fir tree and not far from the Stollenmundliches there is a seating area with a table and benches.
