The Hinkaku Line ( Japanese 品 鶴 線 , Hinkaku-sen ) is a railway line on the Japanese island of Honshū between the Shinagawa and Tsurumi stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area . Its name is derived from the first Kanji characters of the end stations in the Sino-Japanese reading ( , Hin or , kaku ). It is a branch line of the Tokaidō main line , it is used by trains of the Yokosuka line and the Shōnan-Shinjuku line as well as freight trains. The railway company JR East is responsible for passenger transport and JR Freight for freight transport .

description

Shortly after leaving Shinagawa Station , the Hinkaku Line separates from the tracks of the Tōkaidō Main Line . At the former Megurogawa signaling station, it passes the junction to the Yamanote freight line and shortly thereafter takes the Ōsaki branch line (both lead to and from Ōsaki station ). It runs parallel to the route of the Tōkaidō-Shinkansen high-speed line to Musashi-Kosugi station . Along the way, it crosses the Yamanote Line , the Ōimachi Line , the Ikegami Line , the Tamagawa Line , the Tama River, and the Nambu Line . We continue via Shin-Kawasaki to the bridge over the Tsurumi, where the route meets the Tōkaidō main line again. There the freight traffic is directed to the Tōkaidō freight line .

history

On August 21, 1929, the Japanese State Railways opened a double-track line of 17.8 km in length, which stretched from Shinagawa Station via the Shin-Tsurumi freight yard to near Tsurumi . It was built to relieve a busy section of the Tōkaidō main line from the growing freight traffic. Trains pulled by electric locomotives could reach the freight yard from Tsurumi from October 30, 1930, and from Shinagawa from August 1, 1939. Because of the construction of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen , the Hinkaku Line was only partially navigable from February 1962 to March 1964. A decade later, the Hinkaku lineage gradually lost its importance; The reason for this was the Musashino line , which opened in 1973 and pulled numerous trains (especially those with dangerous goods ). Especially between Shinagawa and Shin-Tsurumi there was hardly any freight traffic worth mentioning.

In order to better utilize the hardly used section and at the same time relieve the Tōkaidō main line from passenger traffic, the state railway began on October 1, 1980 to direct trains of the Yokosuka line over the Hinkaku line. On the same day, she opened Shin-Kawasaki Station . The freight yard was shut down on February 1, 1984 and converted into a simple storage facility, followed by the opening of the Nishi-Ōi station on April 2, 1986 . From December 1, 2001, JR East led the newly introduced Shōnan Shinjuku line also on the Hinkaku line. The third new station was Musashi-Kosugi on March 13, 2010 . Since November 30, 2019, the Hinkaku Line has also been used by direct trains from Shinagawa to the Sōtetsu main line.
