Hinokio ( Japanese (ヒ ノ キ オ , HINOKIO )) is a Japanese science fiction film by director Takahiko Akiyama that was released in September 2005 . In Germany it was shown for the first time on November 1, 2008 as part of the Asia Film Festival .

Hinokio is the name of an avatar of a Japanese boy who has retired from life since his mother's death. Instead of himself, he only follows school lessons from now on through the senses of a remote-controlled humanoid robot that his father invented. The boy even experiences friendship and love through the robot, but also scorn and ridicule from his classmates.

Eventually he realizes that his new reality is just a simulation and he needs to go out into the real world to humanly interact and live emotions .

The plot addresses a problem that is already a reality at the time of its emergence for many people who are addicted to computer games, chats or the Internet in general.

Hinoki is a type of tree, Hinokio is a Japanese name with the appended o and is also based on the title of the fairy tale Pinocchio .
