Historic Hinterrein Bridge from 1895

The Hinterrheinbrücke is a railway bridge in the canton of Graubünden . The railway lines Landquart – Thusis and Reichenau-Tamins – Disentis / Mustér cross the Hinterrhein on it , immediately west of the Reichenau - Tamins train station .

First Hinterrhein Bridge

The through 2018 and has since been used located in renovation bridge dates back to 1895, and is available as B-object ( inheritance of regional importance ) under conservation . It is 152.20 m long. Its load-bearing element is a steel framework below . The bridge is single-track. To the east of the bridge is the Reichenau-Tamins train station , to which the double-track line runs from Chur . To the west of the bridge, the track branches off towards Thusis on the one hand and Disentis / Mustér on the other. The Hinterrheinbrücke thus forms an operational bottleneck.

Second rear Rhine bridge

In order to eliminate the operational bottleneck, to be able to double-track the line up to the junction and beyond in the direction of Thusis, a second Hinterrhein bridge was built and opened in November 2018. It is located immediately south of the existing bridge and also enables the first bridge from 1895 to be repaired.

The Rhaetian Railway held an anonymous project competition for the expansion . The task also included that the new bridge should harmonize with the historical bridge and the design of the access roads, i.e. slope incisions and embankments, were part of the task. The project competition brought in 42 entries, five of which were awarded a prize. The design of the engineering association Flint & Neill / WaltGalmarini , a 198.5 m long steel bridge, the roadway of which rests on three bridge piers that fork in the upper part, was used. The segment that spans the Rhine is 63 m wide, the segment that spans the A 13 , which is also bridged , is 51.6 m. 2,000  tons of steel and 1,200 tons of in-situ concrete were used . The superstructure on the bridge consists of a ballast bed in a concrete trough . The new bridge can thus be driven much quieter than the historic one.

The roadway of the new bridge is exactly at the same height as that of the existing bridge and two of the pillars of the new bridge are directly parallel to those of the historic bridge. The latticework of the listed old bridge remains almost unobstructed and clearly visible.

The new bridge went into operation on November 3, 2018. Since then, and probably for about a year, all rail traffic has run over the new bridge while the historic bridge is now being renovated. At the end of 2019 [obsolete] , double-track operation is to begin across the Hinterrhein.
