The film is set in Berlin and in a summer house in Finland from October 1938 to April 1939. The music student Ursula is full of enthusiasm for the Führer and wants to support the composer Hanns Broch in composing a cantata for Hitler's 50th birthday. Since her application is rejected, her fiancé, Gottlieb Just, has to help out. After all, the Reich Chamber of Music pursues its own interests along Broch's communist sentiments. The composer wants to work undisturbed in his summer house in Finland. Gottlieb takes care of the matter and Ursula is finally allowed to assist Broch. Various key experiences and the bitter realization that she probably does not belong to the chosen male breed soon let Ursula's enthusiasm fall silent. She decides to help the pretty Jewish actress Gisela escape from a raid led by Gottlieb. The two very similar women exchange their identities. When Gottlieb Gisela wanted to arrest, Ursula suddenly stood in front of him - she cut her wrists, but survived the attempted suicide.

Healed from National Socialism, Ursula finally meets Hanns again - he visits her at home. His wife Alma left him after she found out about her husband's stormy affair with Ursula. It is shortly before the outbreak of World War II and two individuals have already had to learn bitterly how the Nazi regime violently encroaches on people's privacy.
