The viaduct Freimann the A9 is located in the district of Freimann in Munich . Based on the mythical creature of the same name , the bridge is also called the Tatzelwurm .

location

Coming from the north, the A9 first crosses the U6 tracks , a footpath and Max-Valier-Straße. The siding of the Munich subway to the north ring of the railway runs in this area . The Frankfurter Ring junction is also on the bridge . However, there is no entrance to the south and no exit to the north, as the motorway ends just under two kilometers south. In addition, the Frankfurter Ring ( near Ungererstraße ) and another street are crossed.

Old bridge

In order to cope with the increasing traffic, several ring roads were planned in Munich in the mid-1950s . The Innerste Straße (today Altstadtring ) and the Mittlerer Ring were built as planned, with some reservations. The A9 was to be extended from its previous end point to the Mittlerer Ring. The Freimann high bridge was built to cross the planned outer ring . Only parts of the outer ring were built. The Moosacherstrasse street and the Frankfurter Ring were expanded and the Föhringer ring rebuilt. Today the A99 takes over the tasks of the outermost ring . Built prestressed concrete - concrete box bridge 1958-1960.

Over the years, the structure of the bridge was damaged by the penetration of water contaminated with road salt . Due to defective drainage pipes, salt water could collect in some inaccessible places and lead to corrosion of concrete and prestressing steel . The latter poses a particular problem as it is particularly sensitive to stress corrosion cracking . This made it necessary to install supporting scaffolding in some areas of the bridge. After a test repair of a bridge field in 2002, it became clear that renovation would be uneconomical. Since this renovation would not have eliminated the problem of the sensitive prestressing steel, it was decided in 2004 to rebuild the bridge.

New bridge

Pillar-supported bridge

The bridge was rebuilt from 2007 to the end of 2010. In order to let the traffic pass anyway, work was only carried out on one lane at a time and during this time the traffic was directed over the other lane. In this way, both lanes in each direction were retained at all times, albeit narrower. For this purpose, the bridge was sawed apart lengthways in the middle in 2007. Then the eastern part of the bridge was removed and then rebuilt. Meanwhile, the traffic passed over the western half of the bridge. Then the western part of the bridge was rebuilt. In order to protect the crossing traffic routes (for example the U6 running above ground in this area ) from falling parts during the construction work, protective structures were erected.

The new bridge was equipped with two to eight meter high noise barriers made of acrylic glass . The construction is attached to steel posts. On the inside there are absorbers made of steel boxes to prevent multiple reflections. While the old bridge stood on rows of two pillars each, the new bridge stands on four pillars each. The correspondingly thinner pillars make the bridge appear less bulky.

subculture

A place for subculture is being planned on the previously unused open space around the bridge .
