Oldest reinforced concrete bridge in Germany; Demolished in 2010/2011, was replaced by a steel composite bridge |
The high bridge near Blaichach in the Oberallgäu district was built in 1901 and was one of the oldest reinforced concrete bridges in Germany. It was demolished against resistance from the preservation authorities and replaced by a new building in 2011.
Old bridge
Construction and renovation
The arch bridge over the deeply cut ravine of the Gunzesrieder Ach mountain stream stood at 913 meters above sea level, about 1 km west of the Blaichach district of Gunzesried on the road to the Gunzesried-Säge settlement .
In the 1960s a renovation took place in which the old pillars were encased with new concrete, but the core was completely preserved. As a result, the bridge was functional until the end, even if it was only usable for pedestrians and cyclists and was again in great need of renovation.
Discussion about preservation, decision to demolish
After the municipality's initial considerations about building a new bridge, objections to the protection of historical monuments and the various options (preservation and renovation or demolition and new construction) have been discussed since the beginning of 2008.
The costs of a new renovation were estimated to be higher than those for a new building, and this with a maximum possible load-bearing capacity of the old bridge of 24 tons (heavier vehicles up to 40 tons only with individual approval). During the repair, the bridge, which was the only access to the end of the valley, would have been closed for four months. The cost of a new building including a temporary makeshift bridge during the construction period was recently estimated at 1.9 million euros, of which the municipality should ultimately still bear around 800,000 euros due to state subsidies. Heavy log and gravel transporters would also be able to drive into the new building. A citizens' meeting in the Gunzesried district therefore clearly spoke out in favor of demolition and a new building, and the local council unanimously agreed.
After the industrial-historical importance of the bridge had initially remained unnoticed for many decades, the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation initiated a reassessment and entered the building as a particularly important object in the list of monuments to make demolition more difficult. In addition, the office developed a variant with the planner commissioned by the municipality for the construction of the new bridge, according to which the bridge should be returned to its original condition and renovated in such a way that it would also be accessible for heavy vehicles again. The costs for this were estimated to be slightly higher than those for a new building. The municipality then initially decided not to insist on demolition if enough funds were approved for preserving the monument that the municipality would not incur any additional costs. The government of Swabia promised a subsidy of 65% for the new building, the then incumbent Bavarian Art Minister Thomas Goppel a subsidy from the monument protection for the preservation of around 330,000 euros.
In parallel to the discussions, a temporary bridge - which was required for both variants independently of the discussion - was erected, which was released in October 2009. When the project became more expensive, partly because of the foundation for the temporary bridge on an unstable slope, the municipality of Blaichach obtained the demolition permit for the old bridge against the resistance of the monument office. The Oberallgäu district office issued this in summer 2010.
Only display boards remind of the old bridge.
New bridge
The new bridge is a composite steel bridge manufactured using the sliding method with a total length of 42 meters, a roadway width of 6.5 meters and a total width of 8 meters and a clearance height of around 25 meters. The overall planner of the measures (demolition and new construction) was the office of Dr. Schütz engineers from Kempten , the new building work was carried out by the company Matthäus Schmid from Baltringen near Ulm; the temporary bridge was built by the companies Mühlbauer Stahlbau + Metallbau from Furth im Wald and Engel & Buchelt Bau from Blaichach.
The bridge piers of the old bridge served as a temporary support structure for the new building. After the new concrete foundations had first been poured, construction of the bridge substructure with steel girders began in summer 2010. After an 18-month construction period, the new Hohe Brücke was opened to traffic in early August 2011. In the course of the construction work, the old bridge was completely removed. The official inauguration of the new bridge took place in October 2011. The total cost of the bridge project was around 1.8 million euros.
