The Hohenheim Gardens are a park ensemble located in the Hohenheim district of Stuttgart that belongs to Hohenheim Palace and is largely used by the University of Hohenheim .

The Hohenheim Gardens now cover almost 35 hectares of park area. Large parts of the ensemble are used by the University of Hohenheim for research purposes. The most important parts are the state arboretum with the exotic garden and the botanical garden. The gardens are complemented by a vineyard and a sheep pasture, which cover another 2.2 hectares.

history

From 1776 to 1793, Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg had an English complex built for his then partner and later wife Franziska von Hohenheim , the so-called English village . Almost 35 hectares of park area were created around the facility by the 20th century.

In 1778 the Duke had rare foreign plants planted in Hohenheim, some of which can still be seen in the Exotic Garden today. Friedrich Schiller described the park of Hohenheim Palace as follows: “But the nature that we find in this English complex is no longer what we started from. It is nature inspired by spirit and exalted by art, [...] "

The current one came from the English layout of Karl Eugen Exotic garden emerges. In 1953 this was elevated to the state arboretum of Baden-Württemberg. He still owns 18 large trees from the time of Karl Eugen and three historical buildings: the playhouse, the Roman inn and the ruins of the Three Pillars of Thundering Jupiter .

Since the turn of the millennium, the gardens have been supplemented by other buildings and sculptures.

Works of art

In the exotic garden there is a tower of the winds and in the landscape garden there is a Monopteros built in 2001 .

A memorial was erected in 1998 on the 250th birthday of Franziska von Hohenheim , Duke Carl Eugen's second wife . This monument, designed by the Plieningen sculptor Markus Wolf in the form of an obelisk , stands at the crossroads between the Roman inn and the playhouse.

For the 220th birthday of Katharina Pavlovna of Russia, Queen of Württemberg, a memorial, also designed by Markus Wolf, was erected above the vineyard on May 28, 2008.

Botanical Garden

The Old Botanical Garden was laid out by the Higher Forestry School in 1829 for teaching purposes. From 1974 onwards, with the exception of the trees, they were resettled. It has an area of ​​8.5 hectares.

Medicinal garden

The botanical garden leads through different aspects of the vegetation history from the ice age to the middle ages. Of the 400 or so medicinal and poisonous plants in Central Europe, the 200 or so most important are planted. About 50 of them are contained in the German Pharmacopoeia (DAB).
