Vegetative characteristics

The tall Zypergras grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 70 to 130, rarely up to 190 centimeters. It forms long, thick runners . The smooth stem is triangular with recessed sides. The simple leaves are up to 4, rarely up to 5 millimeters wide and mostly shorter than the stem.

Generative characteristics

Below the inflorescence there are usually three to six bracts, the lowest bract is often 50 to 60 centimeters long. The inflorescence is a six to ten-pointed spiral . Individual spiral branches are up to 35 centimeters long. The spikelets are 10 to 25 millimeters long, light brown to brown and 12 to 30 flowered. There are three scars. The husks are dark brown with light skin margins, with a green central nerve.

The fruit is red-brown to black, sharp, triangular and with a spiked tip about 1 millimeter long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or about 120.
