Holden is a French pop-rock group from Paris , founded in 1998 by guitarist "Mocke" and singer Armelle Pioline.

Career

In 1997 guitarist Dominique Dépret (known under the pseudonym " Mocke ") and Armelle Pioline became friends in Dublin , where they lived together for four years. There her career began in the group "Happiness in Sexyland". Later they founded the group Holden based on Holden Caulfield , the protagonist from " The Catcher in the Rye " by JD Salinger , to take their own first steps. Drummer Pierre-Jean Grapin, Evan Evans (piano) and Richard Cousin (bass) joined them. Together they released L'Arrière-Monde in 1998 under the independent label Lithium. Two thirds of the lyrics are in French and one third in English.

Motivated by well-known musicians such as “Dominique A” and his album La Fossette , the group finally decided to limit themselves for the most part to texts in French. In 2001 they met producer Uwe Schmidt alias Atom Heart , who was responsible for mixing their second album Pedrolira (2002, label: Village Vert). Schmidt lives in Chile , which aroused a certain affinity for the country and led to further engagements and subsequent successes there.

In 2003, the band appeared in a scene in Jean-Marc Mouthout's film “A Unique Chance” (“Violence des échanges en milieu tempéré”) and they also had the opportunity to record music for the film Parentesis by Pablo Solis. Bassist Richard Cousin left the group in 2004 and joined the group "Overhead"; the new bassist Cristóbal completed the band a short time later.

Holden went to Santiago de Chile to record the third album Chevrotine , which was released in 2006, and experienced a success that went beyond the usual.

style

Holden's music can best be compared to the compositions of Jean-Louis Murat, with whom the band collaborated on several covers. Armelle Pioline also took part as a singer on Murat's album Lilith (2003). In 2004 the group recorded a version of La belle vie (part of the Pedrolira album ) with Jean-Louis Murat; Chevrotine also includes the song L'Orage , which was recorded again in cooperation. Like Murat, Holden is having a hard time getting more popular. However, their album Chevrotine is very popular and opens the door to greater success for them.

The members of the band describe their taste in music on the one hand with an affinity for rock bands like The Velvet Underground , but on the other hand also for jazz bands like Thelonious Monk , Chet Baker , Billie Holiday : Rock 'n' Roll and jazz mix in in their own style to the point where it can be regarded as promoting a career. Django Reinhardt , The Byrds , Broadcast , Beck , Joy Division , Glenn Gould , Robert Wyatt , The Strokes or Cat Power are named as other influences .

Your current label (Village Vert) has limited financial resources. Nevertheless, the band enjoys great artistic freedom.
