In the CIA anti-terror center in Kabul, Mathison is responsible for an airstrike in which the terrorist chief Haissam Haqqani is the target in Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan . The collateral damage from the bombing includes several participants at a wedding party. Haqqani's nephew, medical student Aayan Ibrahim, survived the attack and is being monitored by satellite by Mathison and her team. After returning to his campus in Islamabad , an acquaintance spreads Aayan's cell phone video containing the bombing on the Internet without his permission.
